Your output is the final action — pressing the accelerator, easing the brake, or turning the wheel. That decision passes forward, just as a neuron’s output moves to the next layer, helping the whole network progress toward its goal.


The difference is scale: in a neural network, it’s never just one driver. Millions of these “drivers” (neurons) work together, each processing its own inputs and passing outputs forward. Their combined responses shape the network’s overall decision.

In a neural network, bias gives neurons a built-in tendency to act, even without strong input. It allows the model to make meaningful predictions even when the world is quiet.

  • Road signs and traffic = inputs

  • Driver’s judgement = weights

  • Driver’s baseline behaviour = bias



Activation Functions: Turning Thought Into Action


Once all signals and biases are considered, it’s time to decide what to do. That’s where the activation function comes in, it determines how strongly to act on combined signals.

Some common examples:


  • ReLU (Rectified Linear Unit): Acts only on positive cues — fast and efficient.

  • Sigmoid: Smoothly converts signals into a range between 0 and 1 — gradual like easing onto the pedal.

  • Tanh: Balances signals between -1 and +1 — great for back-and-forth decisions.

  • Softmax: Chooses the most probable action when several are possible — like deciding between “turn left,” “go straight,” or “stop.”


Without activation functions, neural networks would respond linearly: no nuance, no curves, no adaptability. Non-linearity allows AI (and good drivers) to handle real-world complexity.
